California Japantowns - Exploring the preservation of history, culture, and community...

Arroyo Grande

The small farm community of Arroyo Grande sits in a protected valley off the Pacific coast and continues to thrive in the temperate climate with year-round farming. The former Japanese school and hall and the open land surrounding it is enjoyed by a local Boy Scout troop. The site was the former gathering place for community celebrations and picnics. The Pismo-Oceano Vegetable Exchange (POVE), which formerly provided shipping for nearly 40 Japanese farms, still serves as a cooperative for the 5 families that continue to farm in Arroyo Grande.
