San Pedro
By 1920, 821 Japanese Americans were engaged in fishing in San Pedro Bay. In 1941 San Pedro still had 3 fish companies, a fisherie, a barge, and ship supply. The small town also included 9 markets, 8 restaurants, 2 pool halls, 2 barbers, and the renown Issei resort, White Point Hot Springs and Hotel. As the fishing industry declined in the 1930s, Japanese Americans turned to agriculture and cultivated approximately 4,000 acres. They also established San Pedro as as a training ground for chick sexers in Southern California. Though very little remains in San Pedro today, comprehensive information on the area is provided by the Japanese American Mapping Project at www.jamhp.org
